I’m a writer conducting research for a book featuring ghost stories of Prince Edward Island. I’m looking for stories about haunted areas, public buildings and homes. Personal experiences are ideal.

I’m writing a book of Island ghost stories. At this point, you might expect a disclaimer, something along the lines of “I don’t know if ghosts exist or not” or “Of course, I don’t really believe in ghosts.” But I’m not going to do that. For one thing, after having met a number of them, I think it would be unmannerly of me to deny their existence. For another…well, there’s a bit of a family tradition, going back to my mom and—I suspect—ancestors further back.
For now, let’s just stick with my mom. Picture a young nurse, alone at a central desk on a quiet ward. Lights were dim in the corridors, only the nurses’ station illuminated. All her patients asleep or blessedly peaceful, at least, Maudie MacLaine was taking the rare chance to fill out a report without a dozen or so interruptions. Absorbed in her task, Maudie didn’t hear his approach until he spoke to her. At his greeting, she looked up to see a young soldier in uniform, leaning on the desk and smiling. Welcoming a little diversion on a long night shift, Maudie chatted to the young man, only half paying attention as she continued to fill out her report.
And then, suddenly, it struck her: It was very late at night; visiting hours were long since over and all external doors were securely locked. Not overly alarmed (Moms always had a lassez-faire philosophy of life), she assumed that he had eluded the nurses when it came time to send all the visitors back to the streets. She laughed. “Where did you come from?” she asked, not looking up from the form. “Downstairs,” came the answer. It took a few seconds for his response to register. But then she realized that the only thing downstairs was the morgue. Maudie looked up from the desk to see him vanished, the corridors stretching dark and empty in both directions.
And she may have had another visit from the young soldier. Another night, just coming off night duty and dead on her feet, Maudie was waiting for the elevator. The doors opened, at last and she started to step forward. Just then, though, she felt someone tap her on the shoulder. She looked behind her to see…no one. Puzzled, she turned back to the elevator and realized that the elevator shaft was empty. Had she stepped in, she would have fallen five stories to the elevator floor.
More recently, Mom had a visit from an old beau…But maybe I’ll leave that one for the book. Speaking of which, I’m looking for submissions. Do you have a ghost story? I’m looking for personal experiences, local legends, stories about haunted houses, haunted public buildings, haunted geographical areas. The only criterion is that it must be based on PEI. Comment by abbie June 8, 2010 @ 2:32 pmHi Ivy: I am a retired professor writing a book on old mills, featuring a section on haunted mills and old mill ghost stories. I’d love to know if you have uncovered any of my types. I’d be happy to put any of your sites and thoughts into the book and give you full credit for providing material. I haven’t run across any on PEI, but haven’t looked very deep either.
It’s been 35 years or so since we’ve been there, and I guess it’s time we made the trip again. My parents were both from Lunenburg County, NS.
Thanks and good luck.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience. Could I interview you for the book? You could be anonymous if you’d like. If you’re agreeable, could you send your contact info to iwigmore AT eastlink.ca?
I once lived in an apartment where lights were turned on and off. When my sister and I were moving out, we walked together from room to room turning the lights out. Then, after we drove to our new place, my sister realized she’d left her cigarettes at the old place and drove back to get them. When she got there, every light in the apartment was on.
There was nobody living there for quite a while after that but people would often see lights on in the apartment.

Comment by Kristen Hambly April 15, 2008 @ 6:03 pmMy uncle has told me numerous ghost stories about the island. The first one that pops into my head is the story of the Strathgartney Inn. It’s a haunted inn, in Bonshaw. My friends and I are doing a documentary for our Media class, and we were going to do it on the story of that inn and document a nights stay there. But sadly, it hasn’t opened up to tourists for the summer yet. So we decided to do Todd’s Hollow, which is also located in Bonshaw. I know those two stories, and a few others. I had them all typed out but it didn’t post my reply haha. So instead of typing them all out again, I figured I’d ask you if you’d heard them before. If you haven’t, I’d be happy to share them with you. Just let me know!
Hi Kristin, I would like to hear more about the haunted Inn.
Comment by Carol May 9, 2010 @ 4:33 pmCan you tell me the story of Todd’s Hollow?
Comment by Courtney Ferguson June 14, 2011 @ 4:50 pmHi Kristen, I’ll be in touch. I have a story based in Strathgartney but it’s just the experience that one woman I know had there. I didn’t realize that the Inn was supposed to be haunted — I’ll be very interested to hear more! Thanks for contacting me.
Comment by iwigmore April 15, 2008 @ 7:39 pmI know of a house that was/is a source of very strange activity. The house is located at Woodleigh Replicas, Burlington PE. Over the years the house has become virtually unlivable. A number of years ago, three gentleman made an attempt to stay in the home overnight and record some activity, however they did not make it through the night as they exited before midnight from sheer fear of the unknown. The home itself belonged originally to the Millman family. You may recall William Millman aged 20, was the last public execution by hanging on PEI back in April 1888. William was tried and hanged for the murder of Mary Pickering Tuplin a neighbor girl suspected of carrying Williams child at the young age of 17, quite a shameful state in those days and something they say William did not want publisized thus being the reasoning for his behavior. This case is often referred to as the Margate Murder because he was accused of shooting and dumping Mary’s body in the southwest river that flows from Margate near Kensington PEI many stories have been told about this. Some years later the farm was purchased by Col.Ernest Johnstone, he and his family raised three generations in the home and built the infamous Woodleigh Replicas around the house. As the years passed, with each generation, the home became more and more suspiciously “alive”.. The Johnstone’s were the last family to reside in the home as a residence. There were many strange occurances that have been recorded and stories told by family members as a result of their experiences over the years, however because of the reputation of Woodleigh Replicas as a reputable tourist attraction, most of the stories were passed off or put under the rug so to speak. I can recall having heard many stories about the house and the property. It is said that at one point even the sound of a man crying out for his beloved Mary have been heard in the hallway of the second floor, footsteps and slamming doors, and the faint sobbing from who some say perhaps is someone with a guilty conscience. I myself spent many nights and many days roaming the property, and having been over the years a somewhat clarvoyance of sorts to the activity that has taken place on the grounds. I experienced first hand much the activity. There is one room in the home that in my childhood, seemed to be of particular interest and I would often sneak to the upstairs front corner bedroom and carry on lenghtly conversations with a lady whom to me was very real as if I were drawn to this room. I have asked many questions in my adulthood of residents of the home and have had many eery responses. One even noted as a teenager that in mid August, although they remember the weather being quite hot and humid, a glass of water had frozen stiff on their bed side table over night. In the morning, frost was noticed on a window as well, enough that one could use their fingernail to scrap messages into its thickness. There is also a spot on a wall in the once “family living room” on the side of the fireplace that was always dark gray and even black in color that fades and reappears from one time to the next. The spot showed through wallpaper and even replastering on several occasions and when I last checked was still visible. It is rumored that this very spot had the plaster removed and even carpenters had inspected the bricks in the chimney to try to determine if there was a leak of smoke producing the spot, however after several attempts to fix the issue, the spot kept returning.. In the clay basement, which only in the past decade recieved a foundation, for many years it was clay and island stone only. One of the children of the house while digging found what seemed to be a grave for animals, having surfaces several small bones in many different sizes/shapes. It would seem that more than just one or a half dozen small creatures had been buried in the foundation at some point. Many years ago, Woodleigh having been sold by the Johnstone’s and under new management, the home was used for office space and staff quarters. It was recorded by one of the office staff who utilized an upstairs bedroom as office space, that through the day into the evening, many strange occurances, noises and footsteps were heard. When investigated, nothing was ever found to be a reliable source of the sounds. Quite often they said items were moved around and or missing only to be found in the strangest places at a later time. As in many years before, paintings or pictures would often be found lying on the floor, the glass broken out of them, infact there was one story, where the front door bell rang and a young girl ran from the back kitchen up the front hallway towards the front porch to see who it was, and another adult witnessed pictures shooting off the walls and falling to the floor behind her.. This child it was also said of the lady’s of the home, was always content in her infancy stages as though something or someone was there to comfort her. Each of the lady’s often thought the other was responsible until oneday they had a conversation about it and realized none of them had done the comforting of the child. The child grew to refer to her “friend” in later years as Mary..whom she even described with great detail, in very similar fashion as the actual 17 year old silenced by gunsot girlfriend of the previous home owner William Millman. Often in the night the baby was heard cooing as though being entertained and watched over lovingly by someone. Make note that the once staircase (often where the high activity of footsteps was heard) has been completely removed from the house and the access to the upstairs now limited to only the kitchen entrance. There is also a road behind the property that leads to the Irishtown road, this road now a Heritage road on PEI, is called the Millman road and leads you to a church where the gravestones of the Millman family can be found. It is said that on certain nights, the faint sounds of chains can be heard rattling in the branches, some have even thought they heard the sounds of the gallows echoing a hanging…this house is most certainly haunted if you ask the right people!

Comment by iwigmore August 5, 2008 @ 5:57 pmCrowbush cove
It was quite a few years back, Long before there was even a hint of a golf course. Crowbush was a campground. A place for thousand of happy campers to go and vaction on the beach during the hot PEI summers. For some vacationers it didn’t always go so well. There was a time when red cross instructors camp at crobush campground. They would sleep in a small army of tents for two weeks each summer while taveling to local beaches to teach the Island youth the wonderful joys of swimming. It was during one of these two week periods that this story occurred, and it’s been passed down the ranks of islanders ever since. There was a set of bathrooms near where the swimming instructors slept. Late one night one of the junior instructors was awoken to the sounds of a screaming baby. Shocked by the sound at first, the junior instructor just figure it was from a local camp sight and went back to sleep. As the instructor tried to sleep, the sound kept getting louder and louder. so the instructor decided to go investigate. The juinor instructor followed the sound of the crying baby to the washroom located next to their camp sight. As the instructor walked closer, the scream seemed to get louder. The instructor turned the corner and walked into the the small wooden building. There was no one inside the building, but the water was running
Comment by fred October 31, 2008 @ 3:10 pmSpent an interesting winter working 10pm-730am shift on the old Abby. In the mid 70s during this time frame the Abby would haul freight cars filled with dangerous materials like fuel etc. these crossings were off limits to the public. The Abby was a unique vessel and her lounges and decor were close to original…if anyone remembers her it was like stepping back in time That winter some of the catering crew ,to break the grind of backshifts engaged in an entertaining past time that included card, palm, tea readings and a Ougi board. It was quite a talented bunch but we were only out for a little fun. We would meet in the ladies lounge across from what was called the pursers square at 3am and the sessions would last up to 90 minutes. Things would get pretty intense among the group then we would break off and go back to our duties. This continued most of the winter a few evenings a week when all of us were together on the shedule..During that same winter backshift I witnessed personally a gentleman dressed in a deck officers uniform standing at the foot of the staircase … a tall non threatening type of guy. He was just staring at me walking past him I even said hello. Then it struck me who is this guy ..I turned and he was gone. Believe me I still get goose bumps thinking of that encounter 30 years ago.
Comment by John November 5, 2008 @ 1:07 amThis is for the lady who posted the story about the house in Woodleigh.

I am trying to conduct some research of my own. (Not writting a book however) Am looking at trying to record voices/sounds of any activity.
Do you know how I can find this house?

Comment by Mary October 24, 2010 @ 1:45 amDear Ladymystery,
Comment by Someonewhoactuallyknowssomehistory November 26, 2008 @ 1:36 amGEORGE DOWIE was the last person to be publically executed in PEI, because it was a botched hanging! They had to do it three times (which was illegal) even though the crowd was screaming for mercy. The militia was called in for crowd control. He was hanged in the square by the old Notre Dame convent downtown. There used to be a prison there back when they were still building ships.
It is an extremely well-documented event, although if you get looking through the old newspapers in the archives, someone made a mistake in the date about 100 years later when they were writing a story about it. Dowie himself, wrote many letters to the newspaper (including a folk-song) while waiting for an appeal.
After the Dowie hanging, executions were no longer done in public. The last people to be hanged on PEI were two guys named Phillips and Lund – it was in the 20′s. They killed a shopkeeper downtown and were hanged behind the 1911 jail, which is a Pizza Delight in modern times.
I wrote a term paper about it back in university.
Edward Lund was actually a distant relative of mine. I would be interested to read the paper you wrote on him (if you still have it). I know he was included in a book produced by an island author, but I am always interested in learning more. My e-mail is thomas.cameron@ryerson.ca — feel free to e-mail me your paper if you still have it.
Comment by Bobby March 20, 2010 @ 2:53 amEdward Lund it my great uncle. I found information on him through family tree websites, this might help you as well.
Comment by Emma Lund November 8, 2011 @ 7:54 amThis is about Peake’s Quay Waterfront on PEI..
i get bad vibes when i think a place might be haunted.
seriously, a few years ago my mum and i were walking around the waterfront and we went into a shop, and almost immediately i got this weird feeling in my legs and i felt kinda sick, and so i thought nothing of it. but the longer we stayed in the shop, it got worse. so i was like “mom… i’m getting weird feelings from this place. can we go?” and she said she felt the same way and i was better when we left, and sometimes when i go into really old houses i get the same sick feeling.
now, i don’t think the store is there anymore (most stores never last long there), but it was pretty creepy. it was the little clothing shop next to the ice cream/food bar (the one next to Billy Beaver(?) I’m sure).
but, yeah. sometimes if I go into an old building or house, i sometimes get this really weird feeling in my legs, kind of like they feel weak, and my stomach kinda feels sick. the longer i’m there, the worse it gets. and sometimes it’s hard to breathe.
my dad lived in a haunted house when he was younger, but that was back in Nova Scotia.

Comment by melissa c January 22, 2009 @ 2:02 amPEI Paranormal is a research group (on FaceBook) that studies phenomena on PEI. We go to many sites where reports of unexplained activity has been said to occur. We would be happy to check your place out for you, if you like.

Comment by iwigmore May 6, 2009 @ 12:15 pmIt might be the Todd Rd, which is just off of the hi-way. I can recall a ghost story about the todd Rd but can’t remember the whole thing.
Comment by David March 27, 2011 @ 9:39 pmCan you tell me where exactly is the Ampitheater in Robinsons Island is?

Comment by Chris October 29, 2011 @ 6:39 pmThe tolling of the bell!!
In the wee hours of Friday morning, October 7, 1859, when all the good residents of Charlottetown should still be sleeping in their beds, a deep bell tone was heard from the bell tower in St. James Church. The somber sound rang out over the rooftops, waking many with the unexpectedness of its doom-laden ring. Then a second toll rang slowly overhead, followed by a third.
Bewildered by the unexpected tolling of the bell, two neighbors who lived near the church hurriedly joined forces in the road outside their homes and went to investigate. Above them, the bell tolled for the fourth time, and again for the fifth time.
As they entered the church yard, the bell tolled for the sixth time, and the front doors of the church swung open with a windy blast. Framed in the doorway were three glowing women dressed all in white. The men gasped, unsure if they were seeing real women, or angels. Overhead, the bell tolled for a seventh time and the doors slammed shut as quickly as they had opened. The men raced to the doors and tugged on the handles, but they were firmly locked. When they peered through the windows, the men saw a glowing woman in white ascending the stairs to the belfry.
The minister and the sexton arrived at that moment, demanding to know what the disturbance was about. The neighbors told the new arrivals what they had seen, and the minister unlocked the door to the church. As they entered the vestibule, they saw no sign of the women the neighbors had seen in the doorway. A quick glance through the church revealed not a living soul.
As the men ascended toward the belfry, the bell tolled for the eighth time. They ran up the stairs, determined to confront the culprit and demand and explanation. When they reached the top, they found the belfry empty and the bell rope tied firmly in place, though the metal of the church bell was still vibrating slightly.
Puzzled and frightened, the minister and his companions searched the church from top to bottom, but it was completely empty. As the bell gave no further sign of tolling, the men left the church, mystified by what had happened.
That evening, the local passenger steamer between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island – called the Fairie Queene – failed to arrive. The people of Charlottetown learned a few days later that the ship had sunk, killing the eight passengers who had boarded her that day. It is said that the bell of Saint James Church tolled eight times on the day of the disaster, thus foretelling the doom of the five men and three women who would board the Fairie Queene later that day.
Comment by Shara Mac February 23, 2009 @ 5:55 pmHi, I know that this is a place to post stories, but I’m just interested in knowing if you’ve heard any stories about a house on the Bangor Road, Morell? I’ve heard stories but I’m not sure how creditable the sources were.
Comment by Krista May 6, 2009 @ 1:47 amPerhaps you are referring to the Mooney Road in Bangor/Martinvale. I have heard it is called the “Screaming Lady” road, where a woman went missing one day never to be found again. Rumors of murder by an abusive spouse who later suicided (several years after). Regarding another house on Bangor Road, I have also heard it is haunted (not sure which one). Reports of an old rocking chair (not sure if house is standing or not anymore) that would be seen rocking by itself…

Comment by ashley February 21, 2011 @ 2:23 amMy late great-uncle Eddie told me about a burning ship seen off the shore of North Cape, when he was young (1900′s). He said that he had heard the stories of a ship aflame. And one day was very surprised as a young man walking on the shore at dusk, to see a ship on fire. But no mention was ever made in town, or by neighbor. So he figured he must have met up with the phantom ship.

Comment by Kathy September 14, 2009 @ 8:59 pmThe Haunting of Mary: In Hunter River, PEI, in the very early 1800s, there was a little girl named Mary. Mary was a trouble maker and everyone in the village were annoyed by her. She played pranks on everyone and they didn’t find it funny at all. Mary’s parents were very abusive and embarrassed by Mary’s behavior. Her room was in the basement and they had no trouble throwing her in every night and locking the door. But Mary made a secret escape and was able to sneak out from her room and she used to go outside and play more pranks, out of revenge. She wasn’t an evil child but just craved attention and love. Being bad was the only way to get herself noticed. One night, Mary played a very very bad prank. she had ruined one of her neighbor’s garden and Mary was, of course, severely punished. Her parents beat her before chucking her into the basement and locking the door. Mary cried for hours before silently going through her secret escape and went to the river. Mary’s house is located right across the street from where today’s Hunter River Bakery is. Mary headed behind today’s bakery, where she had her own little rowboat hidden in the reeds. She quietly went out in the river with it and sat in the moonlit sky, doing nothing but row back and forth, crying silently. No one from the village knew that there was a traveler in the village for the night. He was nameless but sick and twisted. He hid in the reeds, watching Mary. When Mary finally rowed back to shore, as she began to pull her rowboat back into the reeds, the man grabbed her and severely drowned her in the river. Mary tried to scream for help but she couldn’t manage with a mouthful of river water. Mary drowned and the man left Hunter River, unoticed. They say that Mary still roams Hunter River, screaming for help. On a moon lit night you can see the ripples from her rowboat. I have hear dher screams many times and it is the most chilling sound ever
Comment by Paranormal Angel September 21, 2009 @ 2:42 pmI see this thread started in 2007 but if you still receive this then koodos!!
When I was still living with my parents three or four years ago, we were frequently disturbed by happenings in our old farmhouse in North Wiltshire. At first little things started happening, things would be moved out of place when you turned around, lights would go off, footsteps downstairs at night, and sometimes breathing. The worst of it happened when I switched bedrooms before I moved out. In that said bedroom, there was a hatch to the attack and on occasion i would wake up to it bouncing up and down. I ended up repainting the walls at some point, and I would come back to that room or wake up in the morning to find scratches in the paint. In the earlier hours of the morning I would wake up and hear clicking noises travelling back and forth downstairs sometimes breathing as well. On returning home from school one afternoon, the front door was openen, and all the lights were turned on in the home, take not that my step father is a farmer and leaves the house early in the morning, and comes home only late at night. We also live close to an hour from Charlottetown where my mom works, so she is gone early as well. Im usually the last to leave and first to arive everyday. On inspection of the house, there was nothing there. after letting the cat into the house he took one look at me and started to freak out. he ran continuously from one end of the house to the other, trying to hide or escape by jumping out windows ( which were closed ) I had never seen an animal so terrified in my life. Being terrified to really go anywhere I went into our family room and spent the afternoon talking on the phone. After my parents got home, they discontinued the story and we never spoke of it again, but at that night I looked over, and noticed my door way was opened a crack. I looked out into the hallway, and saw the outline of what i think was a little girl. ( it looked as if she was wearing a dress and had pigtails ) her eyes were slightly glowing. She wasn’t there for very long. one minute she was there and the next nothing. I had just written it of as exhaustion, but on other occasions late at night, I would wake up to see a mist like image in front of my face.
I’ve also done research on our community, and have visited two more houses with paranormal rumors. One house used to be a school house my best friend lived in. there have been a few more disturbing experiences. our first one, we were eating lunch and the four of us heard a bell ring. she has an outside door, and an inside door in her entry way… the outside door did not move, but the inside door clicked opening and began swinging open and shut. The floor didn’t creak or anything but this continued for about 3-5 minutes before it stood open unmoving. on another occasion, we were in the field behind her house and we saw a dark figure standing in the tall grass. we went to inspect but we found nothing there…
the last occasion we have footage of. we were filming a movie of mine for a school project and in one of the shots there were two lights hovering in the middle of the room, about 5 feet off the ground. It was a horror movie and we had all light off except for a candle that my friend was holding. we had to take 2 or 3 shots of that scene but the “orbs” were only there in the first shot.
the last my friends had experienced in the house on the hill up from my home. the story was that a teacher used to live in there, and had committed suicide there. They had gone to the house late at night, upon going up the drive way, the car engine died. three of my friends got out of the car except for one who was to scared. after walking about 10 feet from the car, the lights of the car flickered the windows went up, the doors locked and the trunk opened. one of them reported seeing a figure ” dancing in light ” in one of the downstairs windows of the house. my punched the car to the end of the drive way, got in and drove off. on further investigation of this house, another story is that the students lit the house of their teacher on fire, and she died inside. I have never personally visited this house, but driving by it, it is pretty earie.
hope this helps you! If you want I have more expierences Im willing to share! I’m very interested in this myself
Comment by Amy October 24, 2009 @ 3:28 pmHi Amy! Thanks for your post — very interesting. Yes, I still get comments on the blog and I am still working on the book, just in between work and lots of other things so it’s taking a while. I’d love it if you posted more of your stories. And can I contact you for an interview some time over the winter?
Comment by iwigmore October 24, 2009 @ 6:47 pmI lived in Summerside Prince Edward Island from the age of 4 to 17. Even before moving my family has stumbled upon creepy homes all over the place. I spent 12 years living at 122 Northumberland Street and even as a child the house creeped me out, you never truly feel completely alone when you’re alone in a room, every corner feels dark almost. The first time something happened I think I was about 12 years old, I got out of the shower and wiped steam off the mirror and at the bottom left corner I swore I saw a black face staring at me, I took off pretty fast lol. The two rooms that bothered me most were the master bedroom and the basement, even though I spent a lot of time in these rooms, it was never alone, or at least alone for extended periods, 10 minutes at a time tops.
At around the age of 14 I became very interested in paganism and necromancy rituals. Somewhat of a witch I supposed. My bestfriend and I would sit in my creepy basement and play a lot with our ouija board and we had a whole little shrine set up. After a while we had no problem reaching entities on the board, there’s lots of stories about ouija. But the most memorable was when we got something on our board and it kept saying I’m in the corner; this was a dank little corner near our oil tank for the furnace. We wanted to know if it was real or not so we asked it to make something move, and the pentagram that we had hanging from the ceiling began spinning. That was pretty weird. And on another occassion I saw a man sprawled across my little brother’s bed staring at me into the hall, that made me scream. He had dark curly hear and blue jeans on, but he was gone as soon as I opened my mouth lol.
My friend lived in a duplex in Slemon Park which is an old renovated area that housed WW2 soldiers, similar to the neighborhoods around uptown Granville street. She heard lots of noises at night, footsteps, I couldn’t move my legs one night when I slept at her house, felt like my legs were pinned to the floor.
I’m sure no matter where you go in Prince Edward Island, you’re bound to find a ghost or an experience. You can feel it in the air when you arrive, it’s a strange place. lol
Comment by Bootsie McGee October 26, 2009 @ 11:59 pmwow!, i love that story!!
Comment by madii June 8, 2010 @ 2:29 pmit’s very creepy and it’s interesting
That duplex in Slemon Park where you say that your legs where pinned to the floor, which building was that in?? I was staying in Slemon Park when something pressed me down into my bed one night. I couldn’t get up.
Comment by Spike January 25, 2011 @ 8:28 amI don’t remember the address exactly, across from the front yard was a small hill in the middle of a field and it was fairly quiet. Perhaps I can find the address.
Comment by bootsie mcgee June 26, 2011 @ 10:12 pmBootsie, thanks for your stories! It’s interesting that you find PEI especially haunted. Have you had experiences in other houses you’ve lived in?
Comment by iwigmore October 27, 2009 @ 9:36 amMy friend lived in an old house renovated into an apartment building on Granville street, near downtown in Summerside and when they would leave me alone at that place I wouldn’t be able to play CDs in my friend’s stereo. They would continuously skip until other people showed up in the apartment. In the same apartment my friend’s sister stayed home one night while my friend went out to see a movie. When the sister came out of her room at one point she saw a girl with blond hair and a night gown on walking into my friend’s room and she assumed it was her sister since they had similar hair. So she called her name a few times but got no response and when she entered the room there was no one there and my friend came home about an hour later. My friend also claims that one night in a power outage she saw a white face come out from the TV beside her bed and stare at her dead in the eyes.
Comment by bootsie mcgee June 26, 2011 @ 10:11 pmI’ve been at a number of places that spooked me over the years, but none so much as my grandparent’s house in Chelton. It has been about twenty years since I last spent the night there and I still occassionally have nightmares about it.
Even if nothing unusual happened there, it would still be a creepy place. It is on a long road that had few dwellings at the time, in the middle of a woods. At night, there was no light, and the silence would only be broken by the baying of a neighbour’s collie. Furthermore, the room I stayed in had a small door to a crawlspace that ran the width of the house, as well as a bookshelf that contained a number of books about ghosts and witchcraft.
I heard a few stories of things that apparently happened to some of my relatives.
One uncle was staying in the aforementioned room during a visit. I can’t recall the exact details, but he became paralyzed with fear, and while he was motionless, the blankets were pulled down, then back up.
My grandparents woke one night to find their bed was completely drenched.
My mother was frightened of the place and didn’t like staying there, although she never really explained why.
As for myself, I liked being there during the day. At night, however, the house seemed to change. When I was alone in my room in the dark, there was a sense of wrongness. The creaking of the floorboards didn’t seem random, but rather like a pattern, moving from area to area.
The worst is that sometimes, I could swear I heard somebody call out my name. I would sometimes recognize the voices, but it would be of someone I knew could not be there.
The house has been abandoned since ’89 or ’90. I last saw it this past spring, when a couple of friends wanted to take a look at it.. It is still standing, but is not in good shape. I still got a chill looking at it, especially when I was looking up at my grandparent’s bedroom window. I didn’t see anything, but it felt like I should be seeing something.
We did not stay long, as the sun was setting, and we did not want to be there after dark.
Comment by Michael December 31, 2009 @ 6:10 amMy fiance and I drove back from PEI on January 2nd, 2010. This is the newest addition to all of your well explained stories. My Fiance and I drove along Highway Route 1, and I was taking pictures because it was storming out and the trees were filled with snow and the streets were covered in slush as many recall last Saturday the roads were not driving condition, yet the day we wanted to come home. They usually close the bridge , but we left early enough before the real storm hit at around 12:45 pm. So to continue this adventure, I had flashed the camera to my left while my fiance was driving and the fields were as white as doves and the trees were the only things visible. Later that evening when we arrived safe, My fiance was looking through the pictures as she had uploaded them into the computer . She noticed five unusual silouettes of people on the side of the road on her side on the curb. These unusual characters were not noticeable when I snapped the photo while driving. I zoomed into the photo discovering women in dresses and a smaller figure perhaps a young boy or girl. The heads are faded the legs were somewhat cut off. I believe it could have been a tragic accident years ago. I then discovered they were wearing older style attire and one appears to be wearing a hat. I cannot seem to zoom in right to the images faces, they seemed a bit blurred due to white fields in behind. I viewed one for three hours trying to make sense of the image and all I can seem to visualize is a skull on one of the ladies. We have tried different affects and color. We have these written up as copyright.I have this picture if anyone would like to give me information on it, as we were driving past Desable I believe. I was sent this link so I had to comment. I am puzzled yet frightened as I never believed in the paranormal or any spiritual activities in my life until I saw with my own eye. This is definitely a one of a kind photograph. From what I hear of the Island I see that this photo has more to show and perhaps a story. Thanks for reading. I am now a true believer and I want to find the unexplained !!
Comment by crystal kirk January 5, 2010 @ 4:20 pmI too would love to know more about this encounter.. and even see the picture if possible.

Comment by crystal kirk January 5, 2010 @ 4:32 pmHi there i lived in PEI for 20 years I know of a haunted house there, also knwo that the parnormal activity still happened after my family left the home,
Comment by Heather February 17, 2010 @ 9:50 pmI was just wondering if there are any hauntings about the house on O’Dell Rd in Baltic PEI. (Just off of the PWC Road) It is currently abandoned however when approaching it I always get an uneasy feeling. I have been around the area during the night where the weather was warm, my curiosity got the best of me and began to approach the house but not more than a meter ahead I began to get goosebumps and began to get a chill and the feeling as if I was being watched. My friends were about to walk into the house but I kept my distance.. I was too busy starring into the broken windows. That night the moon was very bright and gave just enough light to see into the top left window.. After 3 minutes of continuous starring I did see a something move by the window. I saw the shadow of something.. We all left extremely fast.
Just today my boyfriend and I went back to the same house but during the day.. It was just as creepy and once again the feeling of being watched was lingering…
So I’m very curious about this house, is there any info out there?
Comment by Miranda May 3, 2010 @ 12:14 amHi, Is this house on the Brookland Farm. Are there huge boats on the property. If this is the same one, the road used to be called Matthews Rd. After my great-grandfather. My grandparents lived there ane my mother was born there and I lived there with my family as well. Now it is O`Dell Rd. That is my mothers married name. Apparently my mother has been informed that is has burned down. Never heard of any hauntings though. Don`t remember any thing strange either. However, we were to visit about 5 years ago and I also remember feeling strange and also thought I saw something in the top left window. At the front of the house…the side that the lilac bushes are on. So weird….. Have many great childhood memories… there is an awesome blueberry patch down the lane a ways, on the left hand side.
Comment by Nola Parkinson December 18, 2010 @ 7:28 pmThank you for your reply Nola, as per your description “are there huge boats on the property”, yes that’s the one. There is also a small house off to the side where the green house was and a barn. Do you know who lived in that house after your mom moved? It’s amazing that I’ve been looking for information of the fire for this house and there isn’t anything around. I’m really interested in history, and would love to find the story behind this house that everyone is so creeped out about, would you be able to email me or reply to this message with the name of your Great Grand Father and Great Grand Mother? Do you have any pictures of this house/property that you would be able to shre with me? I look forward to your response, thanks.

Comment by lydia June 8, 2010 @ 2:26 pmHey, I just wanted to clarify a name in the Lund-Philips hanging. It was my great uncle Charles Earl Lund (Earl Lund) that was hung, not Edward Lund as previously stated.
thanks!
Comment by Janean Lund June 22, 2010 @ 4:41 amWhen I was little my cousin and I used to tell each other ghost stories that have been passed down through the years. There is one about a little girl in our family who died a fatal death.
100 years ago, there was a girl in my family named Emily. She was a very pretty little girl, and she lived with her mother, father and her grandmother. One day, her father went away to war, leaving her mother, grandmother and herself to fend for themselves. Emily always loved her mother, but wasn’t fond of her grandmother. In fact, she hated her grandmother. Emily’s grandmother always tried to tell Emily what to do. She would make her go to the store to get their food, and made her seem like Emily was a slave. Emily didn’t like this, and one day told her grandmother. Her grandmother got very upset over this and sent Emily to her room. What Emily didn’t know was that her grandmother was downstairs telling her mother that Emily had hit her. Emily’s mother went upstairs and told her what the grandmother had said. This made Emily upset because her mother would only believe her grandmother. Emily stormed out of the room and was going downstairs to tell her grandmother that she should tell the truth. Emily was very upset and was running, all of a sudden she missed a step on the stairs and fell down them. Emily was in a coma for a few days and then died from hitting her head on the way down the stairs. It is sad that the house is gone, but before it was, it was said that you could hear a thump in the middle of the night every day. I found this family story very interesting and tell it to my little cousins all the time because they love to hear it.

Comment by noah augustine July 21, 2010 @ 5:26 amHi Ivy. My name is Debbie. My Dad was born on the Island and I’ve spent much of my life (but not enough!) there. I have had several encounters which make me adament that I have definately experienced something more than once that I have no explanation for. These things were mainly when I was younger ( I am 43 now; when I say younger I mean from childhood to my twenties) I would put it down to overactive imagination which could be for some of it but there are 3 things that I cannot say that for. I do not waver in what I saw. The clincher for me was that I was with someone who was a very scientific person and we both saw the same thing. I made him write it down and draw a picture. I don’t know if you are still accepting comments. If so,please reply.
Comment by deborah lockerby August 9, 2010 @ 7:50 amHi Deb, thanks for replying — yes, I’m still collecting stories and I’d love to hear yours.
Comment by iwigmore August 9, 2010 @ 11:59 amHi i’m a local independent film maker, and am looking for somewhere moody to shoot; got any recommendations on location, creepy or beautiful.
Comment by Mitchell M August 23, 2010 @ 6:52 pmYou would want to shoot at Yankee Hill, near French River. Creepy, out of the way and very very disturbing in the evening.
Comment by Xtena January 9, 2011 @ 12:26 amI have a story about the lighthouse in Fort Amherst. This happened about 6 years ago, and before I share, I’m just wondering if you’re still looking for material, and if you have any stories about that lighthouse. I`d love to know if anyone else has been reported having the same experience.
Comment by Janelle August 26, 2010 @ 7:02 pmI’m still collecting stories and I’d love to hear yours. I haven’t heard any about the lighthouse but maybe some others have?
Comment by iwigmore August 26, 2010 @ 7:51 pmI live in Charlottetown just on the outskirts of town. When I was about 15 we moved to this house that has an old feel but i am not sure on the actual age. I had one experience but never one since then. I am now 19 and still live in this house. One night I had a friend stay the night. I had a small matress on the floor for him and I had my own bed. in the morning around 930 am, we both awoke to the sounds of someone walking down the hall and what seemed like banging their fists on the walls. Thinking it was my younger brother that sleeps at the end of the hall (which was also the origin of the steps) i got up to give him an ear full. when I looked out into the hall no one was there. I searched the entire house for anyone and discovered through a note on the stove that they had all gone to the farmers market and wouldn’t be back until lunch. I also get weird feelings from time to time but that was the only event.
Comment by david macdonald November 18, 2010 @ 5:43 pmHi, I have been living a house that I am renting to own from my sister. Although she has never suggested ghosts in the house I have no doubt that there still is.
I moved in two years ago and during the first two months we heard sounds that we blamed on rats or mice until one evening. A friend of mine and I were watching a TV show when suddenly we heard footsteps, at one point I was hearing them up stairs and my friend heard them coming up from the basement. My insticts went into full gear to the point I walked to the drawer and pulled out a knife. We seriously thought someone was in the house. I crept upstairs with my friend behind me but nothing could be found, we then headed downstairs only to get the same result. My friend had sworn that at one point someone had been turning the doorknob on the doorway to the basement as if someone were trying to get in.
The next evening I was sitting quietly on the couch and the house was in pure silence when I heard this rapid stomping upstairs, it sounded as if it ran across the top floor… I sat there not being able to move until my friend arrived.. I was literally in shock.
The next evening I got oil and marked a cross over every door way and commanded that all mean ghosts were not welcome and has to leave.
Eversince I have not been scared and nothing like that has happened again although I do make the bed as straight as I can for I know that a kind ghost sits there, I have even seen the imprint and no one else could have done it for my boys were in school. I still hear the creaking of the bed and usually I run to see if I can see something. Who ever this is is very kind unlike the feeling I got from the first one.
Comment by Naomi Edwards December 30, 2010 @ 5:39 pmGood luck on your book!
I once owned a small house out in Darnley, P.E.I.(1998-2005) I got it as a summer home to vacation with my children and visit friends and family(my Mom’s family was originally from the Old Red Sod)It was a small house with a dirt basement with wooden planks for flooring on half of it, the other half concrete.
Comment by Xtena January 9, 2011 @ 1:30 amWhile unloading and setting up our summer residence, the kids were quite excited about having a spot not far from the shore. A few nights after settling in, I had gone to the auction in Kensington they had on Weds. When I got home my older kids were telling me about a bang! they had heard from the basement. I dismissed it,and thought they were over reacting, until I heard it the next day. I was in the kitchen and heard a loud noise. It sounded like a metal bucket falling on the wooden floor below. I looked at my older sons and said “What was that?” They told me it was the same noise that they had heard the night before. I went down the cramped tiny staircase/ladder and looked around the floor, nothing could be found to account for the noise. It continued to happen time and time again throughout our vacation and every summer for the entire time that we owned the house. In fact, it continued to happen even after we had the basement floor cemented. Once my two daughters were the only ones in the house while the rest were in the car waiting to go to the beach, my daughter C.while in the kitchen heard footsteps walking in the basement, and thought it might be her brother, but then she heard the bucket drop, her sister told her, “We’re the only one’s in here.” They quickly left the house. My favorite story about the ‘bucket drop’ was when my dear friends Cheryl and Steven came by the day we arrived on P.E.I. the summer of ’04. We were sitting in the kitchen having a welcome brew and talking generalities. The discussion came around to what goes on in this house, the spooky what, when and where and who saw or heard it. Steven, with a broad smile on his face said “I don’t believe in ghosts.” Immediately below us in the basement we heard a “Boom!”(the sound of a metal bucket dropping on a wooden floor)
I looked at Steven and said, “So Steven, you wanna go check?”
Steven’s reply? “Hell, no!”
We still laugh about that.
Even though we blessed the house with holy water, we had a lot of activity, and it never ceased. I don’t know how bad it would have been if we lived there year round. We heard footsteps above our heads in the attic (which wasn’t big enough to stand up in let alone walk ) It sounded like heavy boots walking across the attic flooring. (Except there wasn’t flooring in the attic!) My son R. and my self both heard footsteps walking down the hallway one night (about 12:15 a.m.) The next day I asked him if he heard the footsteps walk from the kitchen past my bedroom to the end of the hallway, where his bedroom was that he shared with his brothers, and he said he heard it but he wasn’t going to look to see who it was.
My youngest daughter sleeping out in the sofa one night was awakened by sounds of ‘someone dancing in the kitchen’.
Whatever it was it seemed to enjoy knocking on the bathroom door when someone was using it. Many times I was either giving the young kids a bath, or washing my hair in the shower and sharp knocks on the door would be heard. When I opened the door no one would be waiting, and all the kids would tell me none of them knocked. It not only happened to me, but several of my children and a few friends.
I sold the summer house a few years ago, maybe someone else has stories to tell……
Hello, i lived in a house in Summerside (east drive) near hal’s Farmer’s Market, and when living there hauntings happened almost nightly to the point where we were inviting people over to hear it. The stories are many varying from toys with dead batteries going off on their own, my nephew’s play tent being shaken from the inside when noone was in it, the hand prints visible from the outside. Doors opening and closing, foot steps, and voices. One day during a snowstorm the entire house was lit up with a bright lime green light from the outside. Crows and pidgeons would die in awful ways (ie. hang themselves, fly through glass windows). My sister has always had weird things like pinches, pokes, and noises follow her. Her children have seen things, talked to people we can’t see, played with kids they say live in their closets. Many other stories to but it is late and I am tired of typing.

Hi everyone. I have a question about a house on Summer steet in Summerside that is currently on the market. I think the address is 99- it is blue and was once a bed and breakfast. I was interested in it but wondered if it has any creepy history I should know about. I should mention that when I viewed it recently with the realtor, the control panel on the dishwasher started blinking randomly. Any info anyone has is appreciated!
Comment by Christina July 23, 2011 @ 8:55 pmHey there a few years ago we bought a house in Summerside and have since moved out to build a new home, we have rented the house out and have had several tenants tell us the same story of a man in a long black trench coat standing over them in bed while they slept. Doors have opened by themselves and strange noises in the house when there is only one person home. I know of a man that had killed himself on the property but not in the house and i wonder if this is his presence. I have heard noises when i lived there but seen no evidence of anything being there. It is not only one tenant telling me this its several but the presence has never harmed anyone. They have seen light orbs move about the home and then disappear around the next corner. Strange but how can all their stories be so similar and almost the same….
Comment by Lost on PEI August 8, 2011 @ 1:12 amThat sounds pretty compelling — thanks for sharing! It’s interesting that several tenants have told of similar experiences. Are they frightened? I’m also interested in the visible orbs. The ones in photographs are generally discounted as dust or something similar but you can’t really say that about one that’s visible to the naked eye. I’ve seen them quite a few times — some larger ones around people and some smaller ones that have, like you described, zipped around the house, disappearing around a corner or going into another room.
Comment by iwigmore August 8, 2011 @ 10:41 amI was amazed too…my brother was one of the tenants and he told me his story and i was like wow the other tenants werent crazy!!LOL We have owned the house for about 11 years now and i am done being a landlord and i wanna sell it for many reasons but this is one of them. I have seen a ghost in my time but this stuff really makes me shaky….We have never seen anything in this house ourselves..why would the ghost make itself visible to tenants and not the owners and it only happens at night.
Comment by Lost on PEI August 8, 2011 @ 10:18 pmThis house doesn’t happen to be on Argyle Street in Summerside is it? Strange things have happened in a big yellow house on this street. The house has a very similar past (like you describe).
Comment by Stew August 8, 2011 @ 9:47 pmYou should get the house blessed by a Catholic priest.
Comment by C. Morgan August 10, 2011 @ 3:26 pmAt the very least you should get some holy water and bless the place. You do not know what the tenants have been doing, and what they have been conjuring up. Very dangerous, physically, mentally and spiritually.
Hello all, We are the Summerside Paranormal Society and would love to help investigate any of the houses in question. Plus we would love to get ahold of the author of this page to chat about haunted locations on pei.
